For its fifth birthday, AddThis, the world’s largest bookmarking and sharing service, has provided us with answers to the burning questions of when, where, why and how. It’s hard to imagine five years ago, there were less than a hundred million people using the internet. Today, we have over 1.2 billion users sending traffic to the virtual world on a daily basis. As a medium for all sorts of communication, you’d be amazed at the true sharing behavior of web users.

Through my dozens of last-minute shopping e-mails from brands this Christmas season, I ran across this ad in a Victoria’s Secret Pink e-mail telling me to “Think Outside The Gift Box” and “Give a Gift Card to Your Facebook Friend”. Who would’ve ever thought we’d see the day when we’d buy and receive gift cards via Facebook?

Well, along with all brands, gift cards have now shown up on Facebook. Early adopters like Victoria’s Secret, KMart, Sears, Amazon, Starbucks and American Eagle are now offering shoppers the ability to buy and send cards all without leaving the comforts of Facebook. 

Today while I was sorting through my piles of snail mail, bills, credit card offers, and numerous Christmas catalogs, I came across the Express Holiday 2010 booklet. I thumbed through it and just as it was going to its new home in the recycle bin, I noticed something that got the geek in me a little excited. On the back of the mailer, Express had listed not only its website URL, a “find us on Facebook” link and Twitter handle, but also a funny looking black and white computer language barcode. It is with a heavy heart that we must bid adieu to the Sony Walkman. Thanks for the memories, old friend! I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling a little sad saying goodbye. I can remember back to elementary school and buying my very first Walkman. We certainly had some good times spent together with my New Kids on the Block, Madonna, and Poison cassette tapes. One thing is certain though: it’s a different era.
