Wow! It seems like just yesterday that Foursquare was new to the social media scene. Now reports show that Foursquare is poised to hit 4 million members this week! This milestone comes only 50 days after Foursquare signed on its 3 millionth user. While many social media newbies still aren’t familiar with the location-based mobile game, the social media lovers that use it aren’t afraid to say they are addicted (Ahem! Just like yours truly).
We’ve covered “What the heck is Foursquare?” in a past blog, but for those of you who aren’t familiar with the location-based site, let me explain…
Foursquare is a fun way of letting your friends know where you are and what you are doing when you are out on the town. Users check-in using their GPS-enabled mobile phones to score points, unlock badges and even mayor-ships for the places they visit. It’s also a great way to recommend places to go and things to do. Imagine checking in at a new restaurant you’ve never been to and your friend has already recommended the best appetizer on the menu. How convenient!
What does this mean for local businesses though? Free exposure? You got it! You don’t have to have a huge marketing budget to use Foursquare in your local marketing strategy. Just a little bit of time and ingenuity is all it takes.
Many users of Foursquare will broadcast to their respective social networks where they are and what they are doing. Imagine being a small local coffee shop and having “Joe” check-in at your business (ex. Loving the new ginger-spiced coffee @ XYZ Coffee http://4sq.com/XYZCoffee.) His network of friends will know he is there and how much he loves your new coffee blend. Free advertising! Take that one step further and offer a discount to anyone that checks in on Foursquare. Imagine the possibilities.
